Biogas Maximizing Benefits for Farmers

 Biogas Maximizing Benefits for Farmers

With the rising fuel costs, farmers in Kenya have come up with ways substituting firewood in as easy and beneficial matter.

Biogas is increasingly becoming a viable alternative to many farmers here who own at least two zero grazed cows per household. The farmers are able to enjoy more benefits of dairy farming above milk and meat.

Through Biogas technology farmers have also enjoyed an improved production of their produce by using slurry, which is a key organic fertilizer in plant production .This is depicted by the Kiambu farmer.

“Biogas is cheap to produce, clean to use and has helped my family utilize the waste from our dairy herd. It has also boosted our crop production through the production of manure in form of slurry”, said Alex karuhia, a farmer at Kiambu County.
Alex Karuhia is one of the 10,000 farmers that have benefited from the Kenya National Biogas Programme since 2009.The programme which is being implemented by KENFAP ,is one of the programmes under the African Biogas Partnership Programme (ABPP).The aim of the programme is to facilitate dissemination of energy for cooking and lighting through dissemination and construction of biogas digesters.

“Each farmer is required to raise 75 per cent of the total cost of installing the biogas unit. They must also have at least two dairy cows under a zero-grazing system to boost collection of animal waste”, asserted Collins, the Biogas techniciacian for Kiambu region.

“We supervise to ensure that the fitting is done well and the whole unit is functional and readily usable by farmers. We also train farmers on operations and maintenance of the biogas unit once installation is over”, said Tanui, Bigas Techibician for Eldoret.

During the five year period the programme has constructed over 10 000 digesters, trained a total of 600 antibiotics for sale biogas masons and users on construction, maintenance and maximization of slurry . In collaboration with other partners the programme has also embarked of setting up standards for biogas technology and appliances in the country.
